Sheet piling and H piling quite literally play a supporting role in many projects on which Valley Corporation has been a contractor in the Omaha and Council Bluffs metro area. When properly installed, it can be anything from an effective retaining wall to a marine bulkhead or bearing pile, shoring for utility trenches and deep excavations, aiding in soil stabilization and acting as an adjunct to our structural construction alike. Our sheet piling installation and removal services have seen use for new construction, remediation, and reestablishment projects alike.

What is Sheet Piling?

Piles are structures that bear and manage loads, especially between structures that are compressible and those that are less compressible. A sheet pile or an H pile draws their name from their respective shapes, since they are large, thin interlocking plates that are driven into the soil. The “H pile” is a beam (think of an I-beam), and the sheet pile are plates, that come in a variety of materials over the years, including composites, vinyl, and wood. However, we find that the versatility, durability, and ease of re-use afforded by steel makes it the ideal material for sheet piles and H piles alike.

Types of Piling

Sheet piles are typically used for any structure that isn’t assembled (i.e., using masonry or block and basket construction), poured, or injected.

  • Driven piles are put in place using either an impact driver or a vibratory hammer attachment mounted to an excavator. This is the preferred method at Valley Corp.
  • Cast-in-situ pile foundations are used when the surrounding soil would be too soft for traditional driven piles; here, a hole is dug or bored in the soil, and a reinforced concrete foundation laid for the overlying piles
  • Driven cast-in-situ piles split the difference between the above methods, driving a hollow tube into the soil, filling it with concrete, then installing the sheet pile

Uses of Sheet Piling

Sheet piling is an effective way to contain or sequester earth, speeding excavation, grading, and construction. In those cases, it’s not uncommon for the sheet piling installation to be temporary, and the pile removed when it’s no longer needed; at that point, it can either be recycled or re-used elsewhere. However, there are other times — boat slip enclosures, erosion repair, flood prevention, foundation protection, and retaining walls among them — that a permanent installation is called for. Some of the Omaha construction projects undertaken by Valley Corporation have involved sheet piling in the tens of thousands of feet.

When installed with precision and care, sheet piling preserves property and assets alike from the ravages of time, erosion, flooding, and landslides. Our professionals training and skill let us work quickly and accurately, saving you money in the process.

How Much Does Sheet Piling Cost?

Because of the number of variables involved, it’s nearly impossible to give a one-size-fits-all price quote for sheet piling. The amount of piling used, the installation method, labor, and a number of other considerations are in play, so we’ll provide a custom quote only when we have a full grasp of your project, leaving you to reap the cost benefits for years after installation.
